Latest Updates from Our Project:

Subclass Update, Backer Surveys, and Pre-Orders are now open!

A quick progress report...

I hope your holidays were warm, safe, and full of games! I snuck away from family events to squeeze in some paintings of a jackelope foot and some magic hats. I returned to my desk this week energized to wrap up Stabracadabra and plan some more fun projects for 2026!

I'm really happy with how the two books are coming together and I hope you will be too!

Subclass preview coming!

I’ll be sharing a preview ahead of the final Stabracadabra PDF featuring just the Bladeborne subclass rules and the leveling guide for your sentient swords. I want everyone to be able to play with the subclass while I'm adding gems to magic items and fur to monsters. I have a few more edits to complete. I expect this will be the subject of my next project update.

Backerkit Surveys on their way!

I have just sent out a "smoke test" of the Backer Surveys. A small selection of random backers of different tiers will receive the survey link to help confirm that everything is set up properly. Presuming this goes well, the remaining surveys will go out on Monday.

The surveys will give you a chance to add items to your pledge including the unlocked stretch goal of the Edgelord mini kit...

Pre-orders are now open!

If you know someone who missed this Kickstarter campaign, they can check out the link below.

Thank you again!

This was my first D&D/RPG crowdfunding which wasn't part of a Zinequest/Zinemo event (and my first one around the holidays) and the response was wonderful! I can't thank you enough!

I hope you're going to love the books!

Woohoo! Stabracadabra is Funded!
4 months ago – Fri, Dec 19, 2025 at 03:08:43 PM

Huzzah!

It came down to the wire for the final two stretch goals: reaching 300 backers and hitting $11,000. We just succeeded in the former and came super close in the latter. But that's close enough for me! (Plus, I love making VTT icons anyway :) )

I am so excited for Stabracadabra and Death Save Devices! I really hope you're going to love them!

I'll be sharing sneak peeks of the art and pages of both books as they come together!

I've already begun setting up the backer surveys and will be sending those your way as soon as Backerkit's team gives the green light!

Putting together a crowdfunding campaign is such a huge undertaking, especially as a one-person shop. There's so much work to do before it launches, and when it's under way, I'm stressed the entire time wondering what else I should be doing to promote it. It's such a relief when the campaign is over and I get to focus on the best part: making the books!

I can't thank you enough!

I couldn't do this without you!

With 2 days to go, more stretch goals unlocked and unveiled!
4 months ago – Tue, Dec 16, 2025 at 12:09:27 PM

Stabracdabra has hours to go!

The stress in the final three days of a Kickstarter campaign ramps up when the project starts counting down the remaining time in hours instead of days!

More stretch goals unlocked!

Yesterday, we passed the $10k mark and unlocked two stretch goals including the Impossible Blade vinyl sticker and the Edgelord mini add-on.

I also unveiled the last two stretch goals: digital goodies including VTT icons, and a bonus PDF of magic items!

You can see all the unlocked stretch goals on the campaign page.

I made these last two stretch goals extremely reachable as I really want to make them! :)

I'm making YouTube videos again...

I've dusted off my YouTube channel and, thanks to some sage advice from my pal David Petersen of Mouse Guard fame, I'll be sharing some Stabracabra previews and insights from the play testing. Look for those after this campaign wraps up and the Backerkit surveys are out.

It'd been a while since I recorded and edited a video and I think it shows. :)

Thank you again for your amazing support of STABRACADABRA! I couldn't make these things without you! <3

Look for another post from me before the campaign wraps!

But before we go...

I want to give a shout out to two Kickstarter campaigns which are wrapping up soon...

Fantasy Food Fight — A Baking Battle Royale — Redux

This "Project We Love" is described as "An exciting quick-playing card game where you bake dishes, fling them at others and fight be the last baker standing." Fantasy Food Fight is produced by Dodecadonuts. I met Andrew Davis of Dodecadonuts at Gamehole Con and I'm stunned by the design of everything he does. I almost missed this campaign and backed it immediately!

Order of Merchants: The Ultimate D&D 5e Merchant Guild Guide

"Discover 10 detailed merchant guilds for DnD and elevate your campaign with human‑crafted lore, quests, NPCs, items, and secrets!" The creator of this campaign reached out about cross-promoting our 5e projects and I was excited to see that they don't use AI. I particuarly love seeing them boast about their hand-painted art. Great to see!

Both of these campaigns have 4 days to go. I hope you check them out.

Another stretch goal unlocked!
4 months ago – Tue, Dec 02, 2025 at 05:32:51 PM

Yesterday, we unlocked another stretch goal and are well on track to unlock the Impossible Blade sticker and a second mini: The Edgelord!

I've been looking for other Kickstarter campaigns to cross-promote with but so many of them are using AI. :(

I was happy to find Tome of Mystical Tattoos III. It looks great! I love that the artists are credited, and Kickstarter even gave them the coveted "Project We Love" stamp of approval! They are knocking it out of the park!

Their campaign wraps up in then next 16 hours! You can check it out here:

I just backed it myself.

The next Stabracadabra update will include a look at the next stretch goals and a few of the Death Save Devices!

Thank you again for your amazing support!

Three weeks to go! And a bunch of videos...
4 months ago – Fri, Nov 28, 2025 at 04:28:48 PM

The first two weeks have been amazing!

We're closing in on the next stretch goals including the deluxe zine cover, the Impossible Sword sticker, and a second mini!

In other campaign news, I put together a short video trailer for Stabracadabra which you can see on the campaign page. It's easier to create these effects when your art document has sooooo many layers. :)

Earlier this week, Stabracadabra received a very kind recommendation from Mastering Dungeons. Hosts Teos Abadía and Shawn Merwin are stellar designers with credits on countless beloved TTRPG projects including Acquisitions Incorporated, Flee Mortals, The Forge of Foes, Balder's Gate: Decent into Avernus, as well as the currently crowdfunding Dungeons of Drakkenheim setting for Daggerheart, and the upcoming Draw Steel: Crack the Sun.

"Steve Conley mixes great design with great art. I love his past releases. He has Stabracadabra, a cursed fighter subclass for 5E and this is such a brilliant hook... you play the sentient sword and the fighter is your minion. If your fighter dies, you just roll up a new one and keep going. Love it. Love it. Love it." – Teos Abadía

Thanks Teos and Shawn!

And speaking of videos...

I have dusted off my YouTube Channel to ask the question, "Do you need a YouTube channel?"

I've received a few questions about Stabracadabra, I'll be recording my answers and will be sure to share the videos here when they're ready. If you have any questions you'd like me to answer, send them my way or drop them in the comments below.

Thank you again for your amazing support and for sharing this campaign with your friends!

It means the world to me.

Before I go, I'd like to give a shoutout to Tales from the Winter Veil

The creators of Tales from the Winter Veil kindly promoted Stabracadabra in their latest campaign update and I wanted to return the favor.

Creator Michael TaylorLyfe describes Tales from the Winter Veil as:
"A 5e anthology of modular one-shots for Levels 1–13—drop-in adventures with tight pacing, survival mechanics (frostbite, despair, weather), and original monsters steeped in myth and ice."

And I like that the project's artists are credited in the campaign page!

Their campaign ends in 4 days. You can check it out here...
